First person convicted of human trafficking, slavery sentencing

From First Up, 5:06 am on 27 July 2020

The first person convicted of human trafficking and slavery in New Zealand will be sentenced in Napier today. Over nearly two decades, Joseph Matamata brought thirteen Samoans to Hastings to work in horticulture. But he didn't pay them and would beat them if they didn't follow his rules. They sometimes worked fourteen hour days in the fields, and after work were forced to do chores at Mr Matamata's home late into the night. AUT senior law lecturer, Natalia Szablewska studies modern slavery and has followed the case closely. She says the case is significant and a wake up call for every New Zealander.
