The Queen

From Afternoons, 3:10 pm on 20 February 2012

On this day in 1952, a young woman started the day as a princess and finished it as Queen, her father having died at the age of 56. For 60 years, Queen Elizabeth has coped with what she called "this heavy task that has been lain upon me so early in my life." She's not just a queen, she is The Queen, and 2012 marks the diamond jubilee of her accession to the throne. Sally Bedell Smith has written numerous books on famous leaders, and her latest book, on the life of Queen Elizabeth, was written with cooperation from Buckingham Palace. Sally talked to us from Washington DC.
