The upper North Island that we see today hasn't always looked this way. Thanks to some gnarly volcanic eruptions the entire face of the region has been changing over millions of years.

Dr Bruce Hayward is a research geologist, paleontologist and marine ecologist, and the co-author of the book A Field Guide to Auckland: Exploring the Region's Natural and Historic Heritage.
