The Festival of Brass contest, the big event in the New Zealand brass band calendar, begins this Wednesday and it's already looking like a winner.
The committee says it'll be the first national band contest in the world since February 2020; due to Covid restrictions, many overseas bands are only just getting back into being able to have rehearsals.
This year, the National Brass Band Championships return to Christchurch for the first time since 2008, and it'll be the biggest in 30 years with 36 bands taking part.
Upbeat talks with Major Graham Hickman, Chair of the Festival of Brass contest committee, about some of the highlights to look out for.
