I Like Classical Music

From Concert Talk , 12:00 am on 26 November 2022

In November RNZ Concert asked classical music fans to let us know how you feel about some of the music we play regularly on the radio.

Whether you love it or hate it, what you are bored by or want to hear more of, whether it is familiar or new to you.

Knowing what you prefer helps us improve the music mix on RNZ Concert, for example how often we play various styles and pieces of music.

This was the start of a project to refresh the music mix on RNZ Concert.

Here is how you can join in

I Like Classical Music for 2023 has now closed, but this is how it worked:

Click a link to the I Like Classical Music portal. Here you will be asked to tell us a little bit about yourself, then start listening to a series of short pieces of music and click a box to let us know your response to each.

There is over an hour of music we would love your response to, so we have divided it into five sections. You can listen to one or more sections at a time, take a break and come back to it later if that suits you.

For each section you complete your name will go in the draw for a thank you gift of a $1000 Prezzy Card. The more sections you complete, the more chances of receiving the gift.

Please see the terms and conditions for I Like Classical Music below.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Do I need to be an RNZ Concert listener to join the music test?

A: No, if you enjoy classical music - a little or a lot - we’re interested in your thoughts!

Q: Why is RNZ Concert testing its music?

A: Music testing is a standard tool for music radio stations. It is a good way to check in with listeners and potential listeners about what they want to hear.

Q: What will you do with my personal information?

A: Personal information will be held confidentially (Please see our T&Cs below) and will not be shared, distributed or used in any way that you have not agreed to.

Q: What will you do with the Music Testing results?

A: This valuable information will help us make decisions about what, when and how much RNZ Concert plays various forms of music to suit our audiences. We will use it to refine and balance what we need more of and what we might need less of on the radio station.

We may also share some (anonymised) results with our partners in the NZ classical music performance community.

Q: Does this mean this will be the only music played on RNZ Concert in future?

A: Definitely not. This is some of the most-often heard examples of the many thousands of pieces of music we’ve played on RNZ Concert over the past few years. We want to know how we’ve been doing – if people have heard these pieces too often or not enough. In future we may test specific genres, eras or forms of the many types of music we continue to broadcast.

Q: Are you going to suddenly change what we hear on RNZ Concert?

A: No, we know our current audience loves what we do and don’t want major changes. What we will do is to make ongoing improvements to the music mix across the day and week on RNZ Concert to suit our listeners.
