Violinists Olivia McNeill, 23, from Auckland and Diane Huh, 23, from Christchurch, have each won a $2600 Alex Lindsay Award.
Olivia, an NZSO National Youth Orchestra member for nine years, will use her award prize towards her first year of study for a Master of Music at the Hochschule für Künste, Bremen in Germany, beginning next month.
Diane, an NZSO National Youth Orchestra member and NZSO Fellowship Programme participant, will travel to Europe next year and audition for postgraduate programmes.
Auckland flautist Yune-Sang Yune, 23, is the recipient of the $1200 Giese Flute Grant. Yung-Sang will study for a Master of Music at the Folkwang Universität der Künst, Essen in Germany, beginning next year. The award for a promising young New Zealand flautist was established in 2015 in memory of former NZSO Principal Flute, Richard Giese.
Christchurch violist Caroline Norman, who has led the NZSO National Youth Orchestra viola section and performed as a casual player with the NZSO, is the $2600 Michael Monaghan Award winner. The award was established in 2016 after the NZSO First Violinist who passed away in 1996.
RNZ's Cynthia Morahan caught up with Diane and Olivia to talk with them about winning the awards and their plans for the future.
