Soldier's body mutilated in Kashmir

6:10 am on 10 January 2013

Two Indian soldiers have been killed and one of their bodies mutilated in an apparent incursion by Pakistani troops in the disputed region of Kashmir.

New Delhi says the incident is a major provocation and has vowed to respond. A military spokesman told the BBC one of the soldiers had been beheaded and the head taken away.

Pakistan denies its troops crossed the Line of Control into Indian territory.

The ABC reports Indian troops killed a Pakistani soldier in another cross-border clash three days before.

India says a patrol was attacked by Pakistani soldiers near the LoC on Tuesday, when two soldiers were killed near Mendhar, 220km north of the Indian city of Jammu. The fighting lasted about half an hour.

There has been a ceasefire in Kashmir since late 2003.
