The South African swimmer Roland Schoeman has admitted calling a noisy Indian spectator a monkey, but says his remark wasn't racist in nature.
After swimming in the 50 metre freestyle semi-final at the Commonwealth Games, Schoeman had criticised the behaviour of a spectator, who was constantly shouting.
Schoeman says in South Africa, calling someone a monkey is the same as calling someone a hooligan.
The incident has prompted the organisers to monitor crowd behaviour at the venues.
Schoeman won silver in the 50 metre freestyle event.
