First-stage water restrictions are about to take effect in Nelson due to continuing dry weather.
Tasman District Council will cut the Waimea Plains water take by 20% from Monday and says further cuts may be needed.
The plains had only 7% of normal rainfall last month and river flows are declining.
The council says that without rain soon, a cut of 50% might be necessary by Christmas.
