Mother jailed for killing baby over crying

A young mother who killed her baby by shaking him when she couldn't cope with his crying has been sent to jail for two years.

The High Court in Gisborne has found Myra Paea guilty of manslaughter.

She was 18 years old when she became angry with her baby, Milton, and rocked him to the point where she was shaking him.

In a police interview, Paea admitted being stressed and frustrated because her son wouldn't stop crying.

The sentencing judge noted the mother herself suffered severe abuse and trauma as a child, and was a very young and ill-equipped new mother to Milton.
