The tremor at 12.24pm was at a depth of 16km and was centred 10km west of Christchurch.
GNS Science principal scientist Kelvin Berryman said the quake was unlikely to have caused any damage.
The quake was within the range of aftershocks expected at this stage following the February 2011 earthquake.
"We really think that these low-level activities are going to go on for a long time," he said.
"Of course these are not damaging. (At) magnitude 4.1 I'd be really surprised if there was any damage, even anything off the shelves."
