A police spokeswoman said they were called to the scene, on Greys Avenue, about 12.30am, and it appeared the man had fallen from an upper level of an apartment building.

He was taken to Auckland Hospital with critical head injuries.

The spokeswoman said police were still trying to work out what had happened and were talking to possible witnesses and people in the building.

The man's injuries were consistent with falling but even that had not been confirmed yet, she said.

People living in the building who spoke to RNZ said they did not see or hear anything last night and were not aware of what happened until they woke up to find police on the scene.
