Two people from Timaru are to appear in court today after shots were fired at police during an aggravated robbery in Fairlie last night.

A 26-year-old Timaru man faces charges including aggravated robbery, assault and using a firearm against a law enforcement officer.

A 22-year-old woman is charged with two counts of aggravated robbery.

Inspector Dave Gaskin said the police responded to reports of an aggravated robbery of Timaru Post and Gift Shop by a man armed with a knife at about 5pm.

Two hours later, a second robbery was reported at the BP Petrol Station in Fairlie by a man of a similar description carrying a firearm.

The police set up a cordon and stopped the driver. They said he got out of the car, shot towards the police officer and drove off.

The car was stopped again a short time later and two people arrested.

No one was injured in the incident.
