A 74-year-old man has drowned while swimming with his daughter off Peka Peka Beach near Wellington today.
Police said the pair got into difficulties about 6pm.
While the 51-year-old woman was able to get to shore, the man disappeared from view.
Police said someone found the man in the water and pulled him ashore, but was unable to revive him.
The woman was taken to Wellington Hospital in a serious condition.
Police said the death would be reported to the coroner.
