Assessment for Blenheim arson accused

12:20 pm on 26 December 2014

A man accused of an arson attack on the Blenheim Work and Income building early on Christmas Day is having a psychiatric assessment.

The Alfred Street office was ram-raided and set alight early yesterday morning.

Sergeant Jason Munro says a 60-year old man was arrested soon afterwards.

He had meanwhile been remanded in absentia on charges of arson and burglary until such time as he can appear in court.

He said the defendant had been referred to Nelson Marlborough District Health Board mental health unit for psychiatric assessment.

Mr Munro said police were not seeking anyone else but were still investigating the case and would like to hear from anyone who might have seen something.

Police also said it was not the first time the Blenheim office has been targeted.

Mr Munro asked for the public to keep an eye out on businesses not being used over Christmas and to report and suspicious behaviour to police.
