Police in Hutt Valley have found a mother and child they believe an armed man intended to kidnap.
On Monday night police were searching for Jonathan Joshua Antipas, 24, who they believed had illegally entered Kyrstin Wichman's Upper Hutt home with a firearm, looking for her.
But Ms Wichman and her five-year-old son were not there.
Police say they're still searching for Mr Antipas, but have since located Kyrstin Wichman and her son, who are safe and well.
Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Thornton said Ms Wichman's son was being cared for by family members.
He said police are still calling for sightings of Mr Anitpas but have also located the vehicle they believe he may have been driving overnight.
