8:42 pm on 3 November 2009

Last month was the coldest October in more than half a century.

The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) says the official climate summary shows it was the chilliest October in 64 years and some areas had record low temperatures.

NIWA says it rained more than normal in parts of the North Island as well as in Wellington, Marlborough and parts of Canterbury.

However, it was very dry on the West Coast of the South Island.
