Rapist again fails to have evidence heard early

A multiple rapist has again failed to have evidence from a witness brought forward that he says is crucial to his case that he was abused in prison.

Nicholas Reekie is serving preventive detention for the abduction and rape of four girls and women.

Reekie claims he suffered at the hands of prison officers in September 2002, arguing that his human rights were breached and he was falsely imprisoned and tortured.

Since then, he has applied to have evidence from a former prison officer he says abused him heard before his upcoming trial, because that man is dying of cancer.

That was declined by an associate judge in March.

On Tuesday, Reekie's second attempt to have the former officer give evidence was dismissed in the High Court in Auckland.

Justice Harrison said Reekie, who is representing himself, fell well short of putting his case and was miles away from proving that the original ruling was wrong.
