Prime Minister John Key has asked officials for advice on how New Zealand can help the Australians.
Mr Key says while thousands of firefighters in Victoria are on the job, New Zealand is keen to help.
He says it would be very good if New Zealand can offer particularly some specialist help as has been done in the past, since the Australians are always the first to help out if we need it.
The Rural Fire Authority says it's ready to send firefighters across the Tasman.
National rural fire officer Murray Dudfield says it hasn't yet been called on for help, but it's talking with colleagues in Australia daily and is ready to send firefighters as soon as they are requested.
