Firefighters are battling a large suspicious fire in Christchurch.

The Fire Service was called to the Sugarloaf reserve in Port Hills about 9pm.

Fire Service spokesman Andrew Norris said the fire, which covered a couple of thousand square metres, was contained.

He said the transmission mast on the hill was not at risk.

Mr Norris said fire investigators would look into the cause of the fire once it was out, but there was no logical cause for it.
