Wellington residents warned to store more emergency water

Wellington residents may need to store more water to prepare them for a major natural disaster than previously thought.

Today Wellington Water told the city council that residents were likely to need closer to seven days water supply in the event of an emergency, rather than the three days currently recommended.

They said seven days worth of water amounted to about 140 litres per person, with each resident advised to have about 20 litres available for each day.

Councillor Nicola Young said for many people, finding the space to store that much water would be problematic, especially in small central city apartments.
