Firefighters are battling a fire covering about eight hectares of land near Lake Lyndon in central Canterbury.
A Fire Service spokesperson said the fire was on steep tussock land, between State Highway 73 and Lake Coleridge.
A helicopter and about a dozen Department of Conservation staff are at the site.
It is not known what caused the fire.
