It's a drug that's used for those in danger of becoming severely unwell -- people with little or no immunity, for example. It's one of the treatments used for former US president Donald Trump when he had Covid-19.
University of Otago infectious disease doctor Professor Kurt Krause is one of the people who urged Pharmac to move quickly to get supplies of the new medicine.
