Access to rehab in prison getting worse - lawyer

From Morning Report, 6:47 am on 12 August 2021

A senior lawyer says delays around access to rehabilitation programs or psychological help in prisons is not new, but is getting worse.

The acting convenor of the Parole Law Committee Judith Fyfe says the Department of Corrections knows it is keeping prisoners inside for longer, simply because it lacks the resources for treatment and rehab programmes.

Minister Kelvin Davis has denied there was a problem and said it was better to give inmates options at the end of their sentence, rather than help them early.

Fyfe absolutely disagrees with that and told corrections reporter Charlotte Cook access to programs is a critical problem.
