Advocates criticise process for getting benefit sanction refunded

Welfare advocates are criticizing the hurdles and traumatising questions women are facing to be refunded thousands of dollars wrongly taken from their benefit.

In April last year, the Government scrapped the sanction that docked $28 a week from sole parents - mostly women - that didn't name the other parent.

Prior to that some beneficiaries entitled to an exemption still had money deducted.

Now the Ministry of Social Development is trying to track them down to refund that money but some aren't happy with the way officials are going about it.
