Iran threatens legal action over SIS embassy break-in

From Morning Report, 7:14 am on 2 November 2020

Iran is threatening legal action against New Zealand after learning our Security Intelligence Service, in a joint operation with the CIA, broke into its Wellington embassy to plant bugs in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

India has also hit back at an SIS operation that occurred during the same era, demanding New Zealand's foreign ministry investigate an SIS break-in where code books were photographed and passed on to Britain's MI6.

The protests from Iran and India are revealed today in a new episode of the RNZ podcast series The Service, which tracks the role of the SIS in the Cold War.

The podcast was made for RNZ by Guyon Espiner and John Daniell.

Espiner speaks to Corin Dann.
