Christchurch mosque shootings: How sentencing will work

From Morning Report, 7:10 am on 24 August 2020

The sentencing of the man responsible for the 15 March terror attacks will begin on Monday in a court hearing that will be far different from any seen in NZ before.

Fifty-one worshippers were murdered and dozens injured when the gunman opened fire in the Al Noor and Linwood mosques in Christchurch last year.

The latest Covid-19 outbreak has roughly halved the amount of people allowed into the courthouse but 240 surviving victims, family members and journalists will be there.

Monday will be the first time some of the survivors get to see Brenton Tarrant in the flesh after his shock guilty pleas on the first day of the nationwide lockdown in March.

Court reporter Anneke Smith speaks to Susie Ferguson Auckland about how the sentencing will work.
