Govt proposes rules to protect top soils from urban development

The government is proposing new rules to prevent the best soils for food production from being lost to urban development.

Councils could soon be required to ensure there's enough highly productive land available for growing food and other primary production now and in the future, and protect it from inappropriate subdivision, use and development.
