Mystery surrounds the appearance of a stylised skull carved into the sandstone cliffs at Waipipi Beach near Waverley in South Taranaki.
The creation is reminiscent of Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards' famous skull rings, or for millennials - the skull emoji.
