'Pivotal days ahead of us' - Covid-19 modeller Rodney Jones

From Checkpoint, 6:18 pm on 23 August 2021

What can we expect through this Covid-19 cluster, and when the cluster is brought under control?

According to one expert, Delta has changed the land so much the relative freedoms of the last 18 months may be a thing of the past.

There are now 107 community cases of the highly infectious strain. Ninety-nine of those in Auckland and eight of them in the capital.

Government adviser and Covid-19 data modeller Rodney Jones told Checkpoint vaccinating people down to the age of 5 years old will be necessary to achieve a vaccination rate over 80 percent.

“If you vaccinate everybody over 12 you still only get to about 78 percent of the country.

“We're going to need more than 80 percent across the whole country… The UK is at 73 percent and are still having death rates that we couldn't live with in New Zealand.

“So we're going to have to look at ways for getting it as high as physically possible.”

With those who refuse, or cannot receive the vaccine, Jones said the only way to get coverage over 80 percent will be to vaccinate children down to five years old.
