The family of a man who took his own life after walking out of Waikato Hospital's mental health unit supports plans for a new centre at the hospital, but wants more to be done in the community.

The government is spending $100 million on a new acute mental health facility to replace the Henry Rongomau Bennett Centre.

The Prime Minister was at the centre this afternoon for the announcement.

RNZ Waikato reporter Andrew McRae was there.
