In American Samoa, a group of naval and coast guard divers has completed its assessment of a sunken naval tanker in Pago Pago harbour.

The group will submit a report to the Coast Guard captain of the port which will help determine the best way to discharge the gases, diesel and oil on board the Chehalis.

The ship sank after a fire on board in 1949.

Lieutenant Troy Luna, who heads the local Coast Guard office, says the divers found there was no seepage from the Chehalis tanker or any concerns over pollution.

He says there's no time frame as to when the fuel will be discharged, but he says sooner rather than later is better.
