“String Quartet #9 was written for the New Zealand String Quartet, taking advantage of their unique performance skills. These will be made evident from the start of this short single-movement work which unfolds as a series of brief chorales interspersed with more active music. The music begins simply, modally, and becomes gradually more chromatic and complex as it proceeds.”
