Sur/face was written for and premiered by Ensemble Gô in 2015.

Taylor writes: “Sur/face takes its name from an idea of a layering of sound to create a surface not unlike that of film, with its smooth unbroken texture and dusky shine.

“The first movement, ‘Ballooning’, engorges this surface outwards like a balloon, […] Changes in light reveal different things about the surface, but it seems to have an inescapable darkness to it. It conceals.

“The slow movement, ‘Beneath’, is a look beyond the superficial, discovering what inner musings breathe underneath this veil. [...] A seed of hope is planted.

“The third movement, ‘Bursting’, is full of energy and life, the surface shredding from the light yearning to radiate out.”

Recorded by Bob Bickerton in the Nelson Centre of Music Arts, February 2021 and made available to RNZ through the Adam Chamber Music Festival.
