The remarkable Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, was the son of a slave, Europe’s best fencer and a legion commander in the French Revolution. He took Paris by storm and was a top socialite, with friends in high places, including Queen Marie-Antoinette. He was a conductor, virtuoso violinist, and for years one of the top musicians in Paris.

His music was described as ‘rich, passionate and challenging’, and it provided full houses and royal audiences for Saint-Georges.

He produced several concertos, a lot of chamber music, at least 6 operas, and two symphonies. This Symphony No 1 was premiered in 1779.
