ABC cricket commentator and newspaper columnist Peter Roebuck has been found dead at a hotel in Cape town.

Roebuck, 55, was covering the two Test series between Australia and South Africa.

He played 335 first-class matches before making a career writing about the sport, primarily working for the ABC and Fairfax.

He skippered English county Somerset in the 1980s.

The ABC reports he regularly travelled with the Australian cricket team and split the rest of his year living between Sydney and Pietermaritzburg, South Africa.

Captain FC van Wyk of the Western Cape police said an inquest would be conducted into the circumstances surrounding the death, which occurred at 9.15pm on Saturday.
