No punishment for Steve Williams over racist remark

New Zealand golf caddy Steve Williams has escaped official punishment for his racist remark about former boss Tiger Woods after a high-level meeting of golf officials in China.

European Tour chief George O'Grady and US PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem held talks on the final day of the WBC Champions tournament in Shanghai.

The meeting was called after Williams stunned guests at an awards ceremony in the city with his comments.

He later apologised in a statement on his website, saying he now realises the comments could be construed as racist and that was not his intent.

Following the meeting between the top golf officials, Mr O'Grady and Mr Finchem said they consider Williams' remarks to be entirely unacceptable in any context.

They say there is no place for any racism in golf or any other sport.

However, as Williams has apologised fully, they say they consider the matter closed.
