Govt ministers in emergency meeting over Games

3:32 pm on 24 September 2010

Government ministers in India are holding an emergency meeting to discuss the crisis surrounding facilities for the Commonwealth Games.

New Zealand, Scotland and Canada have delayed the departure of their athletes because of concern over conditions at the athletes village.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called the meeting after several participating nations expressed alarm at the state of the athletes' accommodation in Delhi.

Canadian officials have described the indifference of Indian officials as incomprehensible.

The BBC reports New Zealand, Scotland and Canada have all delayed their arrival at the Games. However, England and Wales are committed to the event.

Indian officials have repeatedly insisted the Games are on track.

Urban development minister Jaipal Reddy told the BBC that the media had exaggerated the problems, and that preparations were running smoothly.

Before the meeting, he said more labour will be deployed to clean up the rooms.

Games chief executive Mike Hooper also gave an upbeat assessment, saying there had been improvements every day in the state of the facilities.

Other problems

The BBC reports preparations for the Games have been beset by difficulties - including particularly heavy monsoon rains and an outbreak of dengue fever in the area.

Security issues were also raised after two foreign visitors were shot and wounded in the capital last Sunday.

Ticket sales have been low and the cost of hosting the event has soared.

Estimates on the cost range from $US3 billion to more than $10 billion. Work on the Games began in 2008. The event begins on 3 October.
