At least eight US soldiers have been killed in the latest clashes with Taliban fighters in Afghanistan.
Commander Daniel Dwyer says they were killed in clashes in the north-east region.
US forces said on Sunday that 40 Taliban fighters had been killed in Helmand province in the past 24 hours.
