Vigilantes take town from drug cartel

7:06 am on 14 January 2014

Vigilantes in Mexico have seized the town of Nueva Italia after clashing with members of the Knights Templar drug cartel.

More than 100 men arrived in town on Sunday morning and disarmed the police.

Nueva Italia is in western Michoacan state. Vigilantes are active in several states: residents say the army and the police have failed to protect them.

The BBC reports the Knights Templar has been fighting the New Generation cartel, from neighbouring Jalisco state, for control of criminal activities in the area.

In Michoacan they control several towns and took over Paracuaro and Antunez a few days before.
