Sydney monorail demolition to begin

6:08 am on 12 August 2013

Work to take down the Sydney monorail begins on Monday night.

Dismantling the monorail track and support columns at Darling Drive will be done between 10pm- 5am (AEST). Removal of the stations and concrete support pedestals will mostly be done during the day.

Plasma tools will be used to cut through the tracks and cables, which will be loaded onto trucks by cranes and taken away for recycling.

AAP reports the bulk of the demolition is expected to be completed by March 2014.

Two monorail carriages and 10 metres of track will be preserved in the Powerhouse museum in Sydney.
