A judge in the United States has sentenced a former CIA officer to more than two years in prison.

John Kiriakou was found guilty of leaking the name of a covert intelligence officer.

The BBC reports that he is the first person to be convicted for violating the Intelligence Identity Protection Act in 27 years.

Kiriakou's supporters argued he was actually prosecuted for denouncing the CIA's interrogation practices such as water-boarding.

But prosecutors said he was motivated by fame and money.
