Every year the Rory Peck Awards pay tribute to freelance journalists and camera operators who risk their lives in difficult and dangerous places.

This year's special Sony Impact Award went to Daniel Bogado for Terror in Sudan, a documentary on a war in the Nuba Mountains of Sudan.

He found that thousands of civilians have been forced to shelter in caves from government airstrikes.

The BBC reports that viewer response to the film led to money being raised for a charity supporting a hospital there.

Bogado has covered subjects ranging from witch trials in Central African Republic, gangs in South Africa and kidnapping rings in Nepal. For one investigation he went undercover, joining a group of illegal immigrants in Calais and secretly filming the journey into Britain on the back of a lorry.

His films have been broadcast by Channel 4, BBC and Al Jazeera English.
