The role will involve co-ordinating the activities of the party's parliamentary wing and liaising with the wider party.

Matt McCarten stood as an independent MP in the 2010 Mana by-election, and was involved with the Mana Party after its formation in 2011.

The Mana Party is extending its congratulations to Mr McCarten, saying his appointment will help build a strong coalition of the left to change the government.
