Hapu to keep fighting drilling decision

8:48 am on 20 November 2013

A Taranaki hapu says it will continue to take action against oil and gas drilling near Mount Taranaki to send a clear message to future generations.

Ngati Haua Whanui is appealing against a Stratford District Council decision in favour of Tag Oil which will allow it to drill eight wells within 300 metres of Egmont National Park.

Mt Taranaki, also known as Matua Te Tapu, is considered sacred to local iwi and there are fears drilling may end up beneath the mountain.

The Ngati Haua Whanui hapu says the battle is not over. Spokesperson Karl Adamson says the hapu will put in an objection to the approval of consent with the Environment Court.

Mr Adamson says doing nothing will send the wrong message to future generations.
