England made a strong start to their pursuit of a daunting 368-run victory target against India in the fourth test, which appeared delicately poised heading into the final day at the Oval.

Openers Haseeb Hameed and Rory Burns guided England to 77 for no loss at stumps with the hosts needing 291 runs to go 2-1 up in the five-test series.

Hameed was batting on 43 at stumps, while Burns was on 31 but the home side will need to pull off something special on Monday to accomplish a record chase.

England's highest successful run chase was when they achieved a 359-run target in a 2019 Headingley test against Australia.

Earlier, India's number eight batsman Shardul Thakur smashed his second fifty of the match and Rishabh Pant his first of the series to help India post 466, the highest total of the series.

The 100-run partnership between Thakur and Pant was followed by cameos from tailenders Umesh Yadav (25) and Jasprit Bumrah (24) as the tourists recovered after losing three wickets, including captain Virat Kohli, in the morning session.

Walsh now heads to Zurich for the next Diamond League Final meeting this week.

Samoa Sevens could go on hold

Samoa's rugby sevens programme could be put on ice after Covid-19 forced the cancellation of more World Series tournaments.

The Singapore and Cape Town legs will not take place this year due to the impacts of Covid-19, while the Sydney and Hamilton events in January have also been scrapped.

Back to back tournaments in Dubai, in November and December, are now poised to kick off the 2022 World Series for both men and women.

The men's circuit is set to resume in Canada this month with tournaments in Vancouver and Edmonton, that will determine the 2021 series champion.

But Samoa has joined the likes of Fiji and New Zealand in skipping the events because of the ongoing effects of the global pandemic.

Lakapi Samoa's General Manager of High Performance, Seumanu Douglas Ngau Chun, says the cancellation of so many tournaments means they will have to review the future of their sevens programme.

An extended squad is still training in Apia but Seumanu says they are unable to offer the players permanent contracts and they are being paid a daily allowance.

FIFA appoints former coach to advice on womens game

FIFA has appointed former World Cup-winning coach Jill Ellis to lead the technical advisory group on the future of women's football.

Ellis, who lifted the World Cup with the U.S. in 2015 and 2019, will work with various stakeholders to explore ways to improve the current match calendar and build global development and competitiveness in the women's game.

Ellis takes charge just months after FIFA's congress voted to carry out a feasibility study on holding the men's and women's World Cups every two years instead of four.

European governing body UEFA this week opposed the plans, saying that the proposal would also face resistance from the European Club Association as well as major domestic leagues.
