It hasn't taken long for the first upset in the new Air New Zealand Cup rugby competition with Northland beating Waikato 18-10 in the opening match in Whangarei last night.
The homeside was up 13-3 at half time and extended that lead with their second try midway through the second half.
All Black Sione Lauaki got a late try for Waikato.
Meanwhile Bay of Plenty overcame a 30-hour trip to get to Blenheim to score an 8-7 win over Tasman on a very wet Lansdowne Park.
Both sides scored one try with the Bay kicking the winning penalty late in the match.
Tonight Wellington host Hawkes Bay and Taranaki host North Harbour.
