Ghana, the last African team left in the football World Cup, have scored a 2-1 extra time victory over the United States in Rustenberg to reach the quarter-finals.

With the score level at 1-1 after 90 minutes and the game evenly balanced, Ghanaian forward Asamoah Gyan struck a dramatic winner in the third minute of extra time, holding off two defenders and slamming home a left-footed winner.

A fifth-minute goal from Kevin-Prince Boateng had sent Ghana into an early lead but the Americans fought back strongly after a sluggish first half, equalising just after the hour mark with a Landon Donovan penalty that went in off the post.

Ghana, who face Uruguay in the quarter-finals at Soccer City in Johannesburg, are only the third African team to reach the last eight - after Cameroon in 1990 and Senegal in 2002.
