The All Black Sevens beat Japan 40-14 yesterday evening before being pipped 17-14 by Fiji in their last group match last night to finish second in their pool.
New Zealand will face series leaders South Africa at 4:06pm (NZ time) for a place in the semi-finals.
Australia, South Africa, USA and Fiji went through pool play unbeaten.
Russia shocked Scotland, Wales, who New Zealand beat in their opening pool game on Friday, drew with Fiji.
Australia will be happy with their performance as they followed up their day one win over Samoa with victories against South Korea and England to ensure their place in the quarter-finals against Argentina.
