World tennis number one Rafael Nadal thumped Tomas Berdych 6-4 6-2 to set up a semi-final against the Madrid Open's surprise package, unseeded fellow Spaniard Roberto Bautista.

David Ferrer, the fifth seed, beat unseeded Latvian Ernests Gulbis 7-6 6-3 to join his compatriots in the semis, but Feliciano Lopez couldn't make it an all-Spanish affair as Japan's Kei Nishikori won their quarter-final 6-4 6-4.

The 10th-seeded Nishikori becomes the first Japanese to break into the world's top 10 with his triumph.
